Seguin Place

Tutzi and George Seguin

by Tutzi Haspel Seguin

My Toronto grandmother, Paula Kirschen,  was a friend of Tutzi Haspel
Seguin and her husband George. My grandmother started to paint in her
70s and taking lessons from her friend as well as atending OCAD
ensued.
I remember going up one summer in the mid-1960's to stay at the
Seguin's cottage cum art camp. Some bedrooms were basically beds with
walls around them but Tutzi was such a life-force that she imbued the
the cottage with  art magic. One did not mind the clutter because
every object was a piece of art. She could paint up a storm but she
also cooked like an angel.
The lake was clear as glass and that was a great point of pride for
the Seguins and their family and friends since so many lakes at that
time were getting polluted.
Swimming was heavenly, as was sunning on the rocks.
I did not have the chance to go back but my grandmother did. We did,
of course, see Tutzi and George in Toronto, along with their family.
I have forgotten the address* but never the warm, sophisticated,
embracing feeling of Tutzi's art camp. Is it still a teaching place?

With many thanks,
Micky Wylie
