Lightning Rock

Lightning Rock on Kahshe Lake
by Ted Nishi

According to Native lore, when the ice retreated during the last ice age, some 10,000 years ago, this large boulder was deposited on a high point on the Canadian Shield at what is now Kahshe Lake.

Since this boulder is located on a high point of land, and with no trees around at the time of the ice retreating, it is speculated that during a thunder storm, a lightning bolt struck the boulder., the lightning strike being attracted by the boulder's  composition. The resulting lightning strike split the boulder in half.

It is located on South Bay Road across from the Nishi cottage. The Nishi family have been Kahshe Lake cottagers for over 40 years.

Please note that the boulder is located on private property and can be viewed from the road side.
